I started adventuring right after I graduated. [He elbows open the door, then politely holds it.] I had to gain a few levels and get some experience in before I set out to fulfill my dad's Oath of Vengeance.

Oath of Vengeance?

Yes. Apparently it's time-honored tradition for wizards to use Wisdom as their dump stat instead of Charisma. [Between his father and V, well, the two of them didn't seem to have the common sense necessary to come in from the rain they'd just conjured.]

I thought wizards were supposed to be the wise ones.

That's a stereotype, encouraged because the typical image of a wizard is an old man who's gotten a couple of age category increases to his mental stats. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but whatever limited wisdom my dad might have showed in his older years, he's still a man who drunkenly swore a Blood Oath of Vengeance and then never bothered to follow up on it.

I hope the damn thing didn't transfer here with me. [Roy suddenly looks shocked at the possibility, then alarmed.]

What happens if it's transferred?

...That's a good question. It may be possible that the effects of the Oath are waived. There is no lich Xykon here to defeat, so I can't very well even TRY to follow the Oath any more, can I?

But if it is transferred and I'm held to it, then I'll never be allowed into the Celestial Realm after I die. And it will pass on to my children, although let's face it, I'm probably not having kids anyway.

What if the death is only temporary?

Then I'll be stuck standing on the cloud outside of the processing area till my resurrection comes through. But even so, eventually I'll die of old age...

...I meant here. If it works the way I'm thinking, people probably get automatically resurrected.

That's not all that different than what I'm used to, honestly. Though maybe the idea of new editions being dumbed-down has some weight to it, after all. Still, the same circumstances apply -- eventually I'll pass on.

If this place really functions like an online game that I'm used to, I'm not sure there's a way to permanently die.

Well, since immortality would be an uncomfortable hell if it didn't come with eternal youth, and even then is at best a crapshoot, I hope you're wrong. Not that I'm in a hurry to die or see anyone dead, but honestly death isn't so bad.

I know what it's like for Lawful Good characters, at least in my old campaign setting. I'd like to believe it's still true here.

When I was resurrected, I had a wicked idea for some new sword moves.

[Roy shrugs. He doesn't remember details.]

So you can learn new fighting skills in the afterlife and just... come back? Just like that?

It took a cleric, a Resurrection spell, stealing the diamond off the cast page, and over a hundred strips to make it happen, if I recall correctly. It's normally not that bad at all, though.
