You can generally do a lot of stuff with it. Party invites, inventory, maps, you can check your status... uh, stuff for getting to the dungeons... Stuff like that.

[Sorry, he knows absolutely nothing about MMOs except for the fact that nerds play them.]

The group you travel and fight alongside in any sort of RPG, whether or not it's an MMO, is generally called a party.

Anyway. Party invites are usually pretty quick if you have each others' member addresses. It's pretty easy, if you hold up the relics facing each other, they'll exchange them automatically.
